Reading a sidewall

What the numbers mean.

Take 195/65R15 as the example, because it is one of the most common sizes on the road here.

  • 195 is the tread width in millimetres.
  • 65 is the sidewall height, as a percentage of the width. A lower number means a lower-profile tyre.
  • R means radial construction, which is what almost every car tyre is.
  • 15 is the rim diameter in inches. This one has to match your wheel exactly.

There is usually a load index and a speed rating after that, like 91V. Send us a photo of the whole sidewall and we will match all of it.

Questions

Tyre sizes — the usual questions.

Where do I find my tyre size?
On the sidewall of the tyre already on the car, in the format 195/65R15. The first number is the width in millimetres, the second is the sidewall height as a percentage of that width, and the last is the rim diameter in inches.
Is this every size you have?
No. It is what we carry regularly, which is why it is worth checking here first. Sizes outside this list can usually be brought in — send us yours and we will confirm.
Can I fit a different size to what is on the car?
Sometimes, but it is not a free choice. Changing width or profile changes the rolling diameter, which affects your speedometer, your ABS and how the car sits. If you want to go up or down a size, ask us first.
Do all four tyres have to be the same size?
Across an axle, yes — both tyres on the same axle must match. Some performance cars run a narrower front and a wider rear from the factory, which is why 235/35R19 and 255/35R19 often get bought together.
Do you fit these sizes at my address?
Yes. Every size on this page can be fitted by the mobile van at your home, your office or the roadside anywhere around Sea Point and the Atlantic Seaboard.
